About ETS
Egypt joined the International Tunnelling Society (ITA) as a Member Nation in 1984 under the umbrella of the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), a governmental organization established in 1983 for the purpose of the supervision of major underground projects in Egypt.
Later, the Egyptian Tunnelling Society (ETS), a non-governmental organization, was established in 1990, registered under no. 3993 on 10-7-1993, and became the national representative of Egypt in the ITA.
Since of Egypt joining the ITA in 1984, many ITA activities have been hosted by Egypt. In addition to sharing routine activities of ITA (attendance at General Assemblies, representation on the Executive Council, participation in working groups and other ITA activities particularly the journal ITA newsletter tribune), Egypt has held three international Symposiums sponsored by the ITA in 1991, 1992 and 1999. Cairo was chosen by the General Assembly of the ITA as the venue for its 20th General Assembly, which was held in 1994. This was the first time that the annual Congress and General Assembly of the ITA were held in either the Middle East or Africa. It is fair to admit that most of the representatives of the member nations have commented that this was one of the most successful Congress General Assemblies of the ITA. Another international symposium supported by the ITA was held at 2006 at Sharm Elsheik city.
